The next four chapters as a whole contain violence. Like, significantly brutal violence, including death, dismemberment, etc. You’ve been warned.

Last time, we got some chopped-up villain backstories and the full details of how Amber came to be in a life support pod, and we got a close-up look at the stresses being felt by two Amazonian girls who have been thrust into very undesirable positions.

And ooh, boy, I put off doing this one. To be honest, this is where shit gets real, both in terms of the story and where the fandom explosion began. This is PvP.

So last time, we ended on a rather dramatic note. Pyrrha found out the whole “magic is REAL shock gasp horror” bit, and also had placed on her the burden of being the ‘hero’ who will allow another person’s soul to fuse with their own with unpredictable results. Also, Yang and Mercury fought, and Mercury is now seemingly injured…due to what appears to have been Yang shooting him in the knee after winning the fight, but we know she saw him attack her. Why didn’t anyone else?

Before this episode aired, a warning was posted from Rooster Teeth. As of this episode, they wanted people to be aware that RWBY was heading to some dark places and to maybe keep in mind that this will not always be a show for kids. That is to say, this is the ‘villain’s flashback’ episode. It contains physical and emotional abuse and generally disturbing content, along with very large parasitoid insect creatures, so if that’s not your cup of tea, skip this.

Also, I found video reposts on YouTube. So until those get taken down, we have video links. Huzzah!

Alternate Title: The Actual End, Finally

Welcome back. Last time, we’d just finished Caina. This time, we’ll finish the Answer, even if it kills me (which is looking likelier).

When we go back to the dorm, Metis asks about the door at the end of the second-floor hallway, which sets Yukari off. After that, it’s right back in.

We're DONE. )

Alternate Title: Please Hit Me As Hard As You Can

Alright, it’s time. Time for the Answer, which, while not included in P3P, is canon—so exploring it is necessary to understand the whole game’s legacy. Many, many thanks to themachinatorslab (Empyrea) for emulating this and playing through it so that I can do that, since I don’t have a copy or the hardware myself.

Upon booting up a new game, we’re warned that we should play through the entirety of “The Journey” before undertaking this, and also that the combat difficulty will be higher.

Alternate Title: Ups and Downs

Chris: Last time, we finally decided the game’s ending and complied with what Atlus was repeatedly telling us to do, accomplished by having their sue whine about how we shouldn’t. Thus, we have accessed January, the final month of the game.

Also, I have good news. Thanks to help from

[personal profile] themachinatorslab and an emulation, I'm able to recap the Answer properly. This is good news, as before, my only options were to watch a Let's Play (which would've worked, but felt less honest), or to just recap from memory, which definitely would've felt cheap. Now Not only have they decided to help me recap, but they've decided to join Tris and I for this final stretch of the Journey, too. So let's get going.

Alternate Title: Dour Denouement... of DEATH

Chris: Last time, we went through most of December after being given apocalyptic news by the person we strain to call our friend. The end of the game is right around the corner. Shinjiro isn’t here yet, as he’s getting some medication, but he’ll be here soon. Tristram is here with me.

Tristram: Yo. Sadly it’s gonna be a bit of a shitshow, given what time of year it is in-game.

Alternate Title: Slowly Approaching the End

Chris
: I have utterly lost any ability to care about giving the recap so far; it’s the end of the game, so if you’re starting the spork here, you deserve to be confused. This post contains mentions and discussions of suicide, animal death, depression, starvation, and implied sex. There's also something rather important at the end of this post, so if you could take a look down there, that'd be great. Shinji and Tristram will be joining me.

Alternate Title: I Must Be In Hell

Welcome back. This post contains mentions and discussions of death, murder, self-harm, suicide, and generally creepy behavior towards women. There's also something rather important at the end of this post, so even if you aren't into Persona 3, please have a look. And, in case you weren't made aware last post, we have a guest sporker here, so please welcome Tristram. Now, moving on:

Chris: *Nursing a large bump on his head with an ice pack* You didn’t have to hit me quite that hard, Shinji.

Shinjiro
: *Unapologetic* If you screamed any longer, it’d have made the entry too long to post on the site. Get back to recapping.

Chris: Well, I can’t just yet. For those interested in the obligatory recap of what’s happened so far, last time was a trip to Kyoto, an infuriating series of meet-ups with Ryoji “Accept My Love” Mochizuki, and we fought Chidori, after which she gave her life for Junpei and their Personas fused. The new Persona will be detailed later, but for right now we have to touch on what this means.

Alternate Title: Bad Executions All Around

Welcome back. This post contains mentions and discussions of death, murder, self-harm, suicide, and generally creepy behavior towards women. There's also something rather important at the end of this post, so even if you aren't into Persona 3, please have a look. Before that, though, let me introduce another guest sporker: Tristram!

Tristram: Hello there! You may have known me in the past as littlecaity, and Chris has very kindly invited me to help him with the rest of the sporking. Since this is the point of the game where things get absolutely ‘tree full of drunk monkeys’ wild, I absolutely had to say yes! And also because, despite everything, I genuinely love this game. I could never turn my back on a chance to talk about it.

Chris: We just got back from doing a bunch of Social Linking and Persona-fusing in the aftermath of the betrayal of Ikutsuki and the murder of Mitsuru’s father. Yukari was shown the truth about the tape of her father, and her Persona ascended as a result.

We are at the exact halfway point of Volume 3. So far, progress in the Vytal Tournament has passed the teams and doubles checkpoints. The intrigue between the Big Good Conspiracy has been playing out in a frustrating manner, but was last seen touching on a note of actual plot. Get ready guys, because this is where Volume 3 turns over and exposes its ugly underside.

Alternate Title: The Plot Re-Inflates

I'm not sure what difference it will make to anyone who's been following along so far, but people do actually commit suicide in this chapter.

Chris
: Last time, we maxed out quite a few Social Links, including the Hierophant, Hanged Man, Chariot, Hermit, Emperor, and Priestess. A lot happens in November, so I came with a friend. Ready, Shinji?

Shinjiro: *from his infirmary bed* As ready as I’ll ever be. Let’s do this.

Last we left off, Qrow happened. Qrow, an aggravating, aggressive, rude, violent, absolute jackass of a character dressed up as the “cool drunk uncle who’s rough around the edges” happened. And unfortunately, unlike the new character I actually enjoyed, he’s going to stick around.

*sigh* Let’s just get into it. Today we dip back into the Vytal Tournament. These upcoming fights are…okay, I guess?

This post contains mentions of abuse and alcoholism. Many thanks to

[personal profile] astra_aurora  for beta work!

So, this post is kind of like the Jaune arc from Volume 1 and Weiss/Jaune nonsense from Volume 2, in that it’s kind of the one for this volume (or, the first of a few…) that I’ve been waiting to write and have had in my head for a little while now. With those first two, fandom generally agreed with me that they were terrible, but I hadn’t seen anyone go into depth as to why. This one, though…I was alone. Nobody seemed to be taking issue with this the way I was. Hopefully that will change if I can explain why here.

So, let’s dive back into late 2015, with the third episode of Volume 3 of RWBY:

Jaune is on his break and we have a new character to relentlessly hate on. )
