Alternate Title: Slowly Approaching the End

Chris
: I have utterly lost any ability to care about giving the recap so far; it’s the end of the game, so if you’re starting the spork here, you deserve to be confused. This post contains mentions and discussions of suicide, animal death, depression, starvation, and implied sex. There's also something rather important at the end of this post, so if you could take a look down there, that'd be great. Shinji and Tristram will be joining me.

Start us off, Shinji.

Shinjiro
: It’s 12/4, and the first thing we hear in the gossip on the way to class is how Apathy Syndrome is actually nice and peaceful and puts people at ease. That still ain’t working, Atlus.

Tristram: They’re describing Apathy Syndrome as being almost exactly like dangerous levels of depression and I want to slap these young idiots for saying it’s peaceful and the writers for daring to write something so deeply, deeply fucked up and insensitive. Depression is a serious illness and deserves better representation than this nonsense.

Shinjiro: If you can even call it that much. This just seems like a paper-thin and flimsy way to back up the “humans crave death” angle. Teens not wanting to go to class isn’t the same as “forfeiting the will to live”.

There isn’t shit to do because Mitsuru isn’t around, Aigis is still getting repaired and we have all of our attributes maxed. We don’t even have any other weapons to fuse, and we can’t go to Tartarus. Chris will be boosting Mitsuru’s Link at the shrine and then going to bed on days like this, so there’s no point including it all. Just know that if we don’t make mention of what the day or night was spent doing, that’s it.

Chris
: So, until we have something to do, details on our fusions. We do fuse Atropos with our Fortune Link, mostly to get the Mind Charge skill card, but otherwise we don’t do anything.

12/4 and 12/5 both pass without incident. 12/6 is a Sunday, and with Ryoji gone, we can finally spend it with someone who deserves it: Akinari.

Tristram: Oh thank god! Akinari is one of my all time favourite Social Links across Persona and Devil Survivor and I don’t care who knows it.

Chris: He’s still writing his pink alligator story, and he continues on about the parts he’s added since then, picking up when the bird and the alligator became friends. The alligator was happy to have his first friend, and they started going to the river each day, where the bird would sing for the gator. But that on top of his pink coloration left it still difficult to catch and eat prey, so he was dizzy from hunger most of the time. An angry looks comes over Akinari as he describes the gator accidentally eating the bird one afternoon when it slept in his mouth.

I...shit, son. First of all, why would it sleep in his mouth? Not that it matters, but—

Ill Logic: 102

DEATH IS INEVITABLE: 55

Then he talks about the gator immediately realizing his mistake and drinking swamp water to make himself vomit, but the bird was already dead when it came back up.

Distraught, the gator stopped eating entirely. He says that’s as far as he’s written, and hasn’t decided on an ending. There’s only one way it can end if the gator doesn’t eat for long enough, man. We tell him, in gentler terms than this of course, that this is a bit dark and might traumatize some children. He admits that, writing from his own life, it probably came out more depressing than intended.

Tristram: Honestly, yeah, it’s pretty messed up. And I still really like it, because unlike everything else in this game the darkness comes from an understandable place in the mind of a young man who is actually suffering. Akinari’s not writing dark stuff just for the image of it, he’s writing in a desperate attempt to give his life some kind of meaning.

Chris: He then reminds us of when he was writing in his diary before, which I don’t remember, and then fesses up that it was a lie anyway—he was writing his will. He couldn’t face reality and describes himself as essentially screaming curses into his notebook, but he’s now using the same notebook to write this gator story. When it’s done, he wants us to read it, us having been the reason he started writing it. He looks us in the eyes, and we RANK UP. He says he’s trying to come up with a good ending in the short time he has, and we part ways. We go to bed after we get back to the dorm.

12/7. Ms. Ounishi asks about allotropy and ozone.

12/8. Intuition kicks in and we visit Theo, finding more quests for Harabah. And the last visitation request. Shinji, you can leave now.

Shinjiro: *Eyebrow raised* You got another date with him?

Chris: I do. It has to be done for that 100% completion.

Tristram: I have some spare headphones if you wanna listen to something to drown it out.

Shinjiro: *Turns over in his hospital bed and takes the headphones and places them on his head*

Chris: We go on our last trip with Theo, which is to visit our room. Not just our dorm, our room. He observes said dorm from the outside, politely asking permission to enter, and we lead him there. He looks around, and smiles, though he doesn’t seem to realize he’s doing so until we point it out. He says our “presence” is strong here, wondering if it’s our scent. He gets a tad technical when we inquire, considering it neither good nor bad, but ventures to say he likes it. A blush comes right on cue.

He finally pipes up about his request this time, wondering if it didn’t make us a bit uncomfortable. It did, but only because I romanced Shinji, who Atlus decided should die, so:

> “I was surprised, but no.”
> “With you asking? No.
> “Just a little.”

There’s that blush again, but he smiles. Not coincidentally, the scene changes to show our bed instead of our door, like usual. He calls this world “filled with exquisite brilliance”; the station, the shrine, and the school were all great, he says, and he’s made a lot of unforgettable memories, for which he thanks us. He confirms that this is his last visitation request, and thus his last chance to spend time alone with us. We’re happy to have enjoyed this time as well, and say we don’t want it to end.

He calls us a minx, and I hate to admit it, but it was cringey.

Tristram: It’s better than ‘vixen’, but only just. Yikes, Theo.

Chris: He asks us if we understand what we just said, blushing and frowning. Then he takes our hand, and describes what he’s feeling as sinful. We’re a guest of the Velvet Room, yet his attachment to us is...something. Something he’s given up on ignoring. He tries to ask us to understand a little of what he’s feeling. Trust me Theo, we do.

“If only you could sense even a little of this raging storm in my heart...”

We say that we feel the same way, and he gets the blush again.

“Master Chris...”

> Boldly meet his gaze
> Gently look away

“You wish to compound my sins? The punishment thrust upon me will be made worse as well, you realize...”

I should care, but I giggled at “thrust”.

Tristram: *PFFT* Whelp, there goes any chance I had of getting into the right mood for this scene.

“...Such cruelty.”

Chris: Then he takes off his gloves, and tells us to come over. He takes our hand, saying that he’s been our faithful student up ‘til now, but there are things he can teach us, too. He reminds us that we’re supposed to close our eyes at times like these, and we fade to black, the text saying we spent a long time alone with Theo.

Tristram: Why did we have to suffer through a Social Link with Ryoji when Theo exists? Truly this game is cruel.

Chris: When we fade back in, he’s standing outside the dorm with us, saying that if he stays in this world much longer, he might forget about his duties—which would put us at a disadvantage. That’s why this is the last time he’ll see us, he says. He thanks us again, and asks for our hand one more time to lead him back to the Velvet Room.

When we’re there, he asks us to forget everything he told us there, fearing that if we don’t, he’ll become dependent on us, and then gives us our reward: the item needed to fuse Kartikeya. After describing it, and how it compares to us, he says that no matter how difficult it might be, he’d be by our side should we ever need it. We can try to ask him out with the talk option, but he’ll beg us to stop tempting him and reject us.

Tristram: You can really tell Theo’s events were written by someone who had nothing to do with Ryoji or the Junpei clusterfuck. He’s sweet, he’s kind, he’s a goofball! He genuinely and obviously cares about us, to the point where he’s willing to give up his relationship with us because we need him to be at his very best to survive what’s coming. I want the Theodore link we were denied, Atlus!

Theo also turns up in the two Persona Q games, the first of which we shall speak no further of, by reason of it being legitimately shit.

Chris: No arguments there.

Tristram: Q2 on the other hand makes it very clear that his very presence in that game is to look for and support Minako through an extremely dangerous time, even though he had to cross entire realities to do so. What a sweetheart! *ahem* I swear I’m done now. I’m just really bitter.

While there, we fuse Melchizedek with our Justice Link, and I have to say it looks utterly ridiculous. I’m sorry, it does! It looks like a robotic Power Ranger! We wait to fuse him into Kartikeya due to him not having gotten Repel Dark yet, which will help him.

Despite requests opening up, no, we still can’t go to Tartarus, so it’s early sleep again.

12/9. Mr. Takenozuka talks about Lorentz Force and the left-hand rule.

12/10. Mitsuru tells us on the way to school that we can’t keep going on like this (that is, everyone mumbling and murmuring about how shocked and scared they are and what we’ll do). We’re meeting tonight.

Shinjiro: Finally.

Tristram: *eep!*

Chris: *leaps a mile into the air* I thought you were listening to music right now! How long have you been listening?

Shinjiro: ……

Chris: Christ, you’re a handful sometimes. Give those headphones back if you aren’t going to use them.

Tristram: Don’t hesitate to ask for them back if you need ‘em, that’s why I have so many. You… will probably need them when we get to the last few scenes of Ryoji’s Social Link. Because no, that’s not done yet, and it is going to somehow get worse again.

Chris: Well. In the evening, we meet in the lounge. Everyone organizes themselves and contemplates the information we’ve been given along with the decision. Yukari has a very out-of-character moment where she pokes fun at Junpei for being scared.

WISTLH: 74

Junpei then explodes at us, blaming us for never noticing a thing inside us and bringing about the Fall.

I don’t blame him for being so upset, but……. yo man, I assure you it wasn’t me who decided to jam a death god inside myself at the age of seven. That was all Aigis.

Tristram: It definitely isn’t a good look for him to be raking us over the coals over this, considering him and She Who Must Not Be Named and all the trouble he put us through because of her. How about you shut the hell up, Junpei? We aren’t the one who literally started blurting out the truth because a supposedly pretty girl acted interested in us. Yeah, Gothic Lolita is not a style that works for me.

Chris: He and Yukari cool down and apologize to each other, though. However, no decision gets made, and we all continue trying to live as normally as possible.

However, we can and do go to Tartarus tonight. We turn in Sands of Time and Rainbow Hairs from the enemies in Harabah for a weapon for Shinjiro we can’t use (thanks. No, really, thanks for that. Why would you create a reward for Shinjiro in a block that doesn’t open until after he’s dead?) and Theo saying in passing that time doesn’t exist in the Velvet Room. Melchizedek gets Repel Dark, but God’s Hand doesn’t come for four more levels, so if we want it, we’ll just get it from Vishnu. We fuse Kartikeya, gaining with it the ability to fuse our own best weapon. I should also mention how great Siegfried is—he has Vorpal Blade, which does heavy slash damage to all enemies and gets bonus damage when you’re in Great Condition—which we’ll be in virtually nonstop with so many free evenings. We also fuse Arahabaki, the one we got from Saori’s Link.

Arahabaki is weak to strikes and ice, but at least has the decency to gain Tetrakarn, Repel Ice, and Null Strike to cover it. We gave him High Counter anyway just to be safe until he learned that last one. What's weird is that magic is its highest stat, and yet it gets no spells. The only one it has, Virus Breath (which I got rid of) does a small set amount of damage, and so doesn't benefit from the stat.

Tristram: This was a problem with Arahabaki in the Devil Survivor and Shin Megami Tensei IV games too. It always has the stats for using magic and the MP of a physical warrior.

Chris: Vishnu finally gets Salvation and produces the Chakra Ring, which grants Spell Master passively. We also fuse Sandalphon, the one we got from you, Shinji.

Shinjiro: It better be good.

Tristram: Never leaves my party when I play. It’s absolutely top-tier in every way and if you finangle Victory Cry onto it, well!

Chris: Takes a lot of bird Personas to make, thankfully not all of them from our incomplete Sun Link and four of which we already have. Sandalphon's got no weaknesses and blocks strike and light, and gains Regenerate 3 and Salvation. The last thing we do is fuse Beelzebub, the Persona we got from Mr. Tanaka. Dude’s got a pleasant surprise for his last skill again—Victory Cry.

Akihiko levels up and gains Diarahan, Mitsuru gains Ice Break, Junpei gets Agidyne and Brave Blade, Yukari gets Magarudyne (making her the first to receive a ma-dyne spell), Koromaru doesn’t get anything, and Ken gets Diarahan and Primal Force. Before I leave, I notice Junpei’s new lines, per the usual when a Persona ascends. The ones for his critical hit animation claw at my ears, they’re so bad. As for Fuuka and I, we both reach level 99. Our health and SP jumps from mid-500s to 999 each.

Tristram: I never use Junpei at this point in the game because of that whole ‘doing one thing when everyone else can do several things’ problem, but I’m honestly not surprised to hear that. His VA just goes completely off in battles and I don’t like it.

Chris: 12/11. Ms. Toriumi asks about plurals. We drop off Kartikeya at the antique shop.

12/12. Mr. Ono teaches, and we doze off.

12/13. We pick up our Vel Vel Muruga and talk to Akinari, who’s ill.

He’s having trouble breathing and is coughing up a storm, and we sit at his side while he works his way through it. He reports that he stopped taking his medicine. It’s not going to fix him anyway, right? Just treats the pain and spasms. Dude, why would you…? We voice our distress at this, and he says his medicine makes him drowsy, and he can’t write anything if his hands go numb, and damn it, he is going to finish his story. He thinks that the reason his story is unfinished is because he hasn’t found the meaning of life yet. He gets lost in his story, erases it, doesn’t know what to do with it next. However, he says he has a clearer picture when we’re talking. If he does find the meaning of life, he says, and finishes his story, he hopes that we’ll have a little more time to chat after that. He gives a weak smile, and we RANK UP. The sun’s setting, so he has to leave.

Tristram: It’s not a smart thing to do, but sometimes when the side effects are bad enough not taking medication is seriously tempting. When I first started on my anti-depressants, the brand they put me on turned me into a zombie and I stopped taking them when I realized I wasn’t feeling anything, and it took me years to try a different brand because I was so scared of ever experiencing that again. So I can absolutely understand why Akinari isn’t taking them if they make it impossible for him to do one of the few things he can still do despite his illness. It’s not smart, but it’s understandable.

Chris: 12/14. 2nd semester final exams begin today.

  • What year did the Battle of Dan-no-ura begin? Answer: 1185
  • 12/15. Which element is found in ozone? Answer: Oxygen.
  • 12/16. Which rule relates to Lorentz Force? Answer: Left-hand rule.
  • 12/17. Translate the following: “Fuyu wa tsutomete.” Answer: Winter mornings are pleasant.
  • 12/18. Which plural is formed correctly? Answer: Cacti.

12/19, last day of the exams. We spend time with Mitsuru today. With how many times we’ve boosted her at the shrine, we’d better not have a single holdover meeting for this Link.

Today’s fast food joint of choice is the Octopia takoyaki stand. We brush off her inexperience this time, and she is again amazed at how little it costs, or rather, how much can be bought with the money she has. She’s enamored with the flavor, and we RANK UP.

Wow, that was easy. But, we’re not done yet. She’s reminded of the time she and Akihiko walked by here, and she wonders if we don’t think Akihiko’s been acting weird lately. She doesn’t mean any rudeness, just that she’s known him a long time and noticed a change. She wonders if he’s maturing. We ask if she’s happy about that, and she smiles and says yes. She’s reminded of a lot of things about herself when she looks at him, though she doesn’t know why.

> “...Love?” (I ship it.)
  > “That’s anxiety.” (Probably what it actually is, though...)
> “I think you’re lonely...” (Almost certainly what it is, but let’s not make her uncomfortable.)

She considers our answer, and wonders if she feels so pressed for time because she’s the only one who hasn’t grown. Well, that’s plausible, considering Atlus decided your Social Link should start in goddamn November. She’s sorry for rambling on again, and we say it’s no trouble.

Tristram: I dunno, Mitsuru, you seem to be growing into an absolute badass. You know, when the writers aren’t deciding to break the rules of the game’s universe for ‘execution’ jokes.

Chris: We take Koromaru for a walk tonight.

12/20. Before we can do anything, we see a scene of Yukari’s room. Mitsuru knocks and is invited in. Yukari notes how unusual it is for her to stop by, but Mitsuru just wants to talk, no special message, and Yukari teases her about being lonely. Abruptly, she brings up Nyx, wondering if it’s inside Tartarus. She’s made her decision, she says, and she’s going to fight to the end—better than doing nothing. She then guesses accurately that this is why Mitsuru came to talk—about the decision they have to make.

Mitsuru has indeed made her decision. She intends to take over Kirijo and pick up where her dad left off. Even if she wanted to turn her back on it, she couldn’t. If she dies facing down Nyx, the Kirijo Group will have to go on without her. But she has firm belief they’d fulfill her wishes. Yukari says that no matter what Ryoji says, she isn’t sure about Nyx being undefeatable. And hey, they have an unbeatable teammate too, right? Mitsuru agrees, saying that Death dwelled inside us and amplified our already exceptional abilities, and Yukari talks about us always being so cheerful despite what we’ve been through. She feels like she’s been able to get as far as she has thanks to us. And no matter what happens, at least Yukari’s gotten the best friends of her life out of the deal, and Mitsuru agrees. They’ll be okay no matter how bad things get, so long as they have everyone.

Chris: Yukari continues that ultimately, it doesn’t matter if they die, what matters is that they’re proud of how they lived—and frankly, fighting Nyx would be something she could be proud of. Mitsuru asks if her decision had anything to do with her father. A little, she answers, but it’s more about herself and how she feels. The two of them recall their pact to stand together, and reaffirm it.

Tristram: Honestly the friendship that’s grown between Yukari and Mitsuru is one of the most heartwarming things in the game. They started out at odds with each other for various reasons and now they’re close enough to share their plans for the future and their hopes of becoming adults they can be proud of being. Yet another diamond in the muck kind of moment in this really awful part of the game.

Chris: The scene ends, and we’re handed control, with which we go see Akinari again.

He wants us to congratulate him: as of today, he’s “a free individual”. You finished the story, then, bro? Not quite, he answers, but almost. He just got back from the hospital, and they were going to admit him, but they decided against it. His body’s apparently gotten too weak to undergo surgery, so he’s refused medication again as well. Now, all he has to do is wait for the end, he says, with a smile on his face. But, he explains further.

I don’t feel like I’m the only one being singled out anymore. Everyone is waiting to die if you think about it. …Some just have longer to wait than others. But once the time comes, it’s the same for us all.”

I should give that a DEATH point, but there’s already so many with just this character alone. He’s still a little lonely, he says, but he’s not sad anymore. He asks us to remember what he looks like, calling us by name. We’re beautiful, he says, like a pristine lake, and gives a sad smile. We RANK UP. He thanks us, and says he’s a little tired today, and his story’s almost done. He can show it to us soon, but for now, we part ways.

Tristram: Akinari, I could never forget you. I’ve only cried at video games five times and your Social Link is one of them. (The other four are Shinjiro obviously, Aerith from FFVII, Alys Brangwin from Phantasy Star IV, and the one time I fucked up Dragon Age Inquisition badly enough to make Cole leave.)

Chris: Fuuka is preparing for Christmas when we get back to the dorm to hit the hay.

12/21. Exam results are posted today, and of course we got the highest score. Edogawa talks about Japanese magic, which I ignore. Despite Junpei's moping about his results, he at least did "average", in contrast to all the other times he got low scores, so there's that. We try out our Phys Boost skill card on Siegfried, and it turns out to grant Weapons Master, not its own skill. We take Koromaru and Ken for a walk.

12/22. We get a call from Theodore, telling us about a lost human. Mr. Edogawa is filling in and talks about near-death experiences in what I can only describe as yet another pointless hammer to the face about how denying death is bad, learn to walk happily into death's awaiting arms you stupid fools.

"If an individual who is dying denies that fact... He eventually realizes that death is a reality he must accept, and becomes angry. As a result, he'll try to do anything he can to extend his life."

YES, BECAUSE THAT'S KIND OF WHAT HUMANS DO. THE HUMAN BRAIN AND BODY NATURALLY WANT TO EXTEND THEIR LIFE AS LONG AS POSSIBLE, AS IS THE CASE IN EVERY LIFE FORM ON THE PLANET. THAT DOESN'T MEAN WE'RE ALL MORONS WHO CAN'T ACCEPT THAT DEATH HAPPENS.

"But the futility of this leads to depression."

Fuck, I'm so depressed that I'm not immortal. Aren’t you, Tris?

Tristram: Fuck no. I don’t want to live forever. I just want to live long enough that I feel like I left the world a better place than I found it.

"In the end, he accepts his fate. Although we may initially deny death," (we don't), "we'll accept it in the end. That's just how we humans are."

Akinari Kamiki. He just described Akinari Kamiki exactly, and labels this as something everyone experiences. Fuck you, Atlus.

Three points, plus a fourth for his ugly little detour into the happiness felt during a near-death experience.

DEATH IS INEVITABLE: 59

Tristram: It really amazes me that Edogawa is allowed to teach ever. Not only does he always ignore the subject to lecture about magic, he’s pretty much completely wrong 99% of the time! No two people experience death or near-death the same way and generalizing it is not only insulting but actively harmful to people experiencing depression! He’s putting the kids with mental health problems in danger! Not to mention all the unsanctioned experimental concoctions he uses! Why is this man employed at all?

Chris: *Fuming* You fools. Idiots, the lot of you. Why are you all being Akinaris? Why can't you be more like mature, graceful Chidori, who walks towards death happily, and in fact seems determined to die as soon as possible by whatever means?! First of all, this is just the latest of Atlus' hammers to the face of course, but I want you to keep it in mind for when we get another flimsy prop-up for its intended reason for the Fall. Which will be soon.

We talk to Mitsuru to get our exam rewards, which is a set of king-tier stat-boost cards and a Mediarahan skill card. Then, we spend time with her in the library

She remarks that soon, we'll be looking back at this time with nostalgia. We tell her she seems ill at ease, and she says she's just tired. She's been facing a lot of shit in the aftermath of her father's death, including inheritances, the future of Kirijo, and the expectations of those involved with those things. Her plans for college or entering the workforce proper have likely been nipped in the bud. After a moment of silence, she asks our thoughts on marriage. We give the obvious answer: marriage is for those in love to pursue. Though, "the end of your life" was tempting. She laughs, calling us straightforward. However, she's a Kirijo, and she can't just do what she personally wants. An arrangement like marriage is usually for business, not love. For her, it's a social contract; your social backgrounds are linked, not just the body or soul. Her parents married for business, but as time passed, they grew into genuine love. She asks our opinion, and wishes she could ask her father. We RANK UP.

Tristram: I like that she says that her parents grew into love, but I’m very concerned with her thinking that it’s a necessity for the future of the company. I wonder who at the Kirijo Group has been pushing marriage on her so soon after her father’s death… For punching purposes, obviously!

Chris: We go to Tartarus that night to rescue the missing person.

12/23. Today is the Emperor's Birthday, apparently, so no school. We get to a scene at TPI back alley, though it looks like a different area. Akihiko and Ken are here again, the former saying he thought the latter was going to be visiting his mom's grave. When Ken thought about what he was going to say to her, it didn't feel right, he says. There's things he still needs to do before talking to her again. Akihiko feels the same way about Shinji. The two of them, like Yukari and Mitsuru, decide that they want to fight Nyx.

Tristram: This is another scene that I’m rather fond of. It’s good to see Ken finally starting to deal with everything he’s been through and Akihiko’s increasing strength of character as well as strength of body.

Every now and again some really interesting writing shines through the morass of the plot.

Chris: We take Koromaru for a walk with Akihiko. He talks about being jealous as a kid of those who had someone special in their lives.

That's it for this post. Next time, we'll be doing the Christmas and New Year's portion of the game.

Oh, hey, you made it this far, thanks. I'm in a bit of a pickle.

I work for a company contracted to a warehouse. It was supposed to be good pay, decent hours, and for a while it was. But for whatever reason, the work has just not been there recently. The supervisors have been sending us home half a day in or even as soon as we get there, because they have no work for us to do and can't pay us. This has made it increasingly hard to save money--I can barely make back what I spend in a week just to survive, let alone pay rent.

That would be bad enough, but I found out in January that the company's contract with the warehouse ends March 18th, 2022. That means that by about the time this post goes up, I'll be out of work. I'm searching for another warehouse job in the meantime, but there's a strong chance I could end up unemployed and, in that case, rapidly losing money until broke.

I got bills. Food, gas, rent, phone, Medicare. When spring comes around, I'll have to start paying the lawn and the kid's daycare, too. I haven't been able to buy birthday presents for my loved ones.

I'm not in danger of starving to death, as of yet. But, I do want to move out. This house has been an unpleasant place to grow up and I have wanted to leave for years. I think I can save up the money I need on my own, if I just find a high-paying job, but in the meantime, I'm gonna need some assistance.

I have a Cash App here.

I've also been trying to think of projects people might pay to see me produce. Let me know what you guys think of a full-length video retrospective on Supernatural.

Thanks,
Chris
