I think the guard is referring to them as humans, because Alyx's actions caused the Red King to turn into the Red Prince.
Even that doesn't make sense, because if they were really implying ascension here, then it should match the portrayal of later in the volume, i.e., coming back New and Improved. The Red Prince could quite honestly not have been a lesser version of himself prior by any means I can think of, he's that frustratingly juvenile. Did the Red King perhaps average 20 beheadings a day as opposed to the Prince's mere 10?
