Supernatural post-season 5 had two big problems, and one of them was a refusal to let Misha Collins and Mark Sheppard go despite the fact that the show had run out of anything to do with their characters. SPN isn't hte only show to keep characters around because the showrunners/writers are big fans of the actors playing them, but it's one of the worst for letting their characters warp the show around them.
The other, possibly related, problem was that they didn't seem to have any new ideas and just kept recycling the same beats over and over again: Dean and Sam fall out and split up for a bit; one of the brothers tries to live a normal life but can't; Dean gets sent to hell etc.
