Huh. It’s been a while. RWBY is at nine whole volumes now, and it’s getting its own anime—no, seriously, an animesque show is getting its own anime adaptation. What the shit.

So last time, we ended on a rather dramatic note. Pyrrha found out the whole “magic is REAL shock gasp horror” bit, and also had placed on her the burden of being the ‘hero’ who will allow another person’s soul to fuse with their own with unpredictable results. Also, Yang and Mercury fought, and Mercury is now seemingly injured…due to what appears to have been Yang shooting him in the knee after winning the fight, but we know she saw him attack her. Why didn’t anyone else?

Before this episode aired, a warning was posted from Rooster Teeth. As of this episode, they wanted people to be aware that RWBY was heading to some dark places and to maybe keep in mind that this will not always be a show for kids. That is to say, this is the ‘villain’s flashback’ episode. It contains physical and emotional abuse and generally disturbing content, along with very large parasitoid insect creatures, so if that’s not your cup of tea, skip this.

Last time, we got some chopped-up villain backstories and the full details of how Amber came to be in a life support pod, and we got a close-up look at the stresses being felt by two Amazonian girls who have been thrust into very undesirable positions.

And ooh, boy, I put off doing this one. To be honest, this is where shit gets real, both in terms of the story and where the fandom explosion began. This is PvP.

We left off with Vale in dire straits. The Grimm are invading, the White Fang are attacking, the Atlesian robots have been hacked and are turned against the citizens. Penny’s dead, everyone’s traumatized, and there’s a fucking dragon attacking the city. How will things get worse? Because they are going to get worse. Let’s find out now.

It is also almost a half-hour long. If I remember correctly, animation work on this episode was finished a matter of hours—maybe less—before it was due to be uploaded and aired.

We last left off on an absolutely fucked note. Adam turned out to be a domestic abuser and stalker, and stabbed Blake in the gut and chopped Yang’s fucking arm off. Cinder killed Amber before the power transfer could be completed and now has the full power of the Fall Maiden.

But that last part’s not so bad. After all, she’s going up against the wizard who gave the original power to its wielders, Ozpin! Surely he’ll defeat her!
