RWBY 2018 – Volume 5 Retrospective

Volume 5 Final Thoughts (Part II) | Table of Contents | Volume 6

____________________

Most people, when writing long critiques of RWBY, probably wouldn’t wait until Volume 5 to do a retrospective. Most would do it after Volume 3, which many feel was the last volume of “true” RWBY, and if nothing else was certainly the turning point of the show as a whole.

However, I wanted to write a retrospective that truly explores the quality of the show. Volume 3 may have been where RWBY changed forever, but Volume 5 is where it died.

Let’s take a look at the counts and how they’ve progressed through each volume, yeah?

This one comes with a little something special. )

RE: Gray, Miles, Kerry, Calxiyn, RWBY

So my Final Thoughts were getting pretty long, and I ended up snipping this bit about a particular video that I ended up not relying on too heavily when discussing the matter of Gray Haddock and the damages he possibly incurred to RWBY’s fifth volume.

RWBY, Volume Five.

Said it at the beginning—I’m honestly not sure why Volume Four holds a reputation as a particularly poorly-written volume of RWBY, especially when this came right after it. It’s the bad volume of RWBY—it’s the one that was so unequivocally crap that not even die-hard stans who would lap up anything Rooster Teeth gave them were able to defend it. And now that it’s over, I’m almost not sure how to proceed with explaining why it was so bad. But I have some ideas.

So you want to know how RWBY died? )

Welcome to my Final Thoughts on RWBY, Volume 9. Now, regardless of whether or not this ends up being the last volume of RWBY, it won’t be my last Final Thoughts on this show—I have one I’m cooking up for the show as a whole.

But before we get there, we have to observe the abomination that was Volume 9. And there is just so...so much.

Simply put, this was a mistake. )

Well, here we are, guys. The last episode of RWBY Volume 9, and if I'm reading the signals right, very likely the last episode of RWBY as a whole. There's certainly been enough crying about the budget from RT's side.

When we last left off, we had Ruby Rose's suicide attempt swept under the rug and dressed up to be a magical metamorphosis of personal change that only she gets to decide on, rather than something she was tortured into doing. Yanno, normal stuff.

A disappointing end to a disappointing volume, and beyond. )

We last left off in Volume 5's thirteenth episode, "Downfall" as two women with the powers of maidens were about to face off. The trash talk’s out of the way, so let’s get into it.

The grandest disappointment of them all, or at least top three... )

I have a headache. That cliffhanger was brutal, because there’s so many points buzzing around waiting to be awarded. Let’s just get through these last few episodes.

Yes, Jeff really did name the track like that. )

Last time we left off, Volume 9 had finally decided to stop playing around and just become flat-out unpleasant. Let's see if we can somehow top it in the volume's penultimate episode.

Alternate Title: I Think I'm Going To Be Sick

Well, RWBY has come to haunt another Saturday. It's just this, and then two more episodes left. Judging by the presence of Roman Torchwick in the thumbnails, I'd say this is a Neo-centric episode. But more importantly, some forewarnings:

A character commits suicide in this episode. That's your forewarning, and a more substantial one than Rooster Teeth gave, which was merely about 'distressing themes'. I mean, it has those too, plenty of them. You name it, this episode's got it. Excessive violence, trauma, manipulation, suicide, uncomfortably rape-y imagery... Yeah, this is that episode. I've tried to put the appropriate warnings in the tags to cover everything.

No, seriously, we went WAY off the rails here. )

Alternate Title: Paper Mario & Ruby Lets 'Em Have It

*rubbing temples* I have a cold. I hurt and I feel gross. And now I'm recapping this week's episode. Goddamn it.

Last week's episode provided us a lot of questions. Will the cat be an ally? Will Jaune be the hero for once? Will Ruby make any actual move towards developing as a character? Was all of this necessary? Will there be a gay wave that finances RWBY enough to greenlight Volume 10? The answer to all of these questions is no, but unfortunately, I've got to spork anyway.

16 of these next 18 minutes are useless but the last 2 are great )

Alternate Title: Rooster Teeth Play Their Hand

We're entering the back half of the volume now. Four more weeks to go.

Last time, Ruby had a vision sequence, WBY got normal-sized, Neo cloned the Jabberwalker into an army, and our heroes ran the fuck away to let the cat and their mind-controlled bird minion handle it. Charming. Oh, and Jaune's now back in the story as a basement dweller in rusted armor.

This early?! )

The Wonderland arc of RWBY has so far been painful and aggravating and altogether pointlessly irrelevant. Let’s see how they’ll disappoint us this week.

The characters turn to the camera and explain how they are so not badly written. No real plot progress is made. )

I’m back. Last time the story slowed to a goddamn crawl as it bloated up with filler upon filler, and we were made to watch a half hour’s worth of people just sitting around and talking.

I imagine that will continue, to no one’s enjoyment.

So, as mentioned in the ToC, character shorts preceded this volume of RWBY as they did for Volume 4. However, this time there were three of them, spaced out to create even more hype. They start with Weiss, then is Blake, and then is Yang.
